It is not commercially available in the United States but is also utilized as a dewormer for livestock. Initially manufactured by Janssen, Levamisole was introduced in 1969 for treating worm infestations and received FDA approval in 1990 as an adjuvant therapy for colon cancer. In the 1970s and 1980s, it was also used as an antirheumatic therapy for patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Pharmacological Action
Levamisole hydrochloride, a left-turning isomer, is a biologically active derivative of tetramisole, belonging to the imidazole group. It inhibits acetylcholinesterase enzyme activity, blocking ATP formation, and affecting the neuromuscular system of parasites. This inhibition causes muscle contraction and paralysis in parasites, leading to their death within 12 to 24 hours of administration. In animals, Levamisole is metabolized to oxy-mercapto imidazolidine, which positively influences the immune system of mammals and birds.

Applications and Dosage
Levamisole is used for deworming cattle, sheep, pigs, dogs, and birds (including chickens, geese, turkeys, and pigeons) against gastrointestinal and pulmonary nematode infestations. Specific dosage recommendations include:

  • Cattle, Sheep, Pigs, Dogs: 1 gram per 10 kilograms of body weight, administered orally with water or feed.
  • Birds: 3-4 grams per 10 kilograms of body weight, administered orally with water in a single dose or divided over 3-4 days.
  • Pigeons: 1 gram per glass of water, replacing all drinking water for 3-5 days.

Contraindications and Warnings
Levamisole should not be used in the final third of pregnancy, during the breeding season, or in laying hens and weakened animals. It should also not be used in conjunction with pyrantel, morantel, organophosphates, or neostigmine. Post-treatment, animals can be slaughtered after 7 days, and milk and eggs can be consumed after 3 days. If slaughtered before this period, meat should be used for feeding carnivorous animals or for meat and bone meal production, and milk should be fed to non-productive animals.
